Most youth organisations are built on a quiet assumption. Young people are the ones who need help, and adults are the ones who provide it. The relationship runs one way.
That assumption is not usually stated out loud, and it is not born of bad intent. It comes from how services are funded, how programmes are designed and how accountability is reported. But it shapes everything, including what young people believe they are capable of.
A different starting point
The CLINK Initiatives works from a different premise. Young people are not the problem to be solved. They are the people closest to the problem, and the ones most likely to see solutions that outsiders miss.
Our role is to connect them with the expertise, organisations, technology and opportunities that turn an idea into something real. Sometimes that means co-design with specialists. Sometimes it means funding a prototype. Often it means simply getting the right people in the same room and staying with the work long enough for it to matter.
What this looks like in practice
In the Youth Solutions Challenge, young people define the problems from their own experience. Specialist partners join once the problem is clear, not before. Teams validate their thinking with real users, and the solutions are tested rather than assumed to work.
This is slower than announcing a programme and delivering it. It is also more honest, and it produces solutions that fit the people they are meant to serve.
From beneficiaries to builders
The shift is not just about language. It changes who holds decision-making power, who is credited, and what counts as success. A programme that treats young people as builders measures itself by what they created, not only by what they received.
That is the standard we are setting for ourselves.
